The first part of Shakespeare's two history plays follows the reign of Henry IV. King Henry IV's son, Prince Hal, spends his days carousing in seedy taverns with criminals and lowly commoners, much to the disappointment of his father. Hal’s unusual path to the throne leads him to the battlefield, where questions of honor and reputation come to a head.
