Andrea Sachs is an aspiring journalist who, after searching for an opening at a "serious" publication, lands a job as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the intimidating editor-in-chief of the prestigious fashion magazine Runway. Andrea quickly discovers that working for Miranda is demanding and testing, requiring her to make personal sacrifices in order to learn how to navigate the ruthless world of high fashion. As she grapples with the pressures of her job, Andrea's relationships with her boyfriend, friends, and her own self-identity are put to the test.
