Alaa Shehada writes and performs this world premiere solo work on memory, loss, and resilience.
For twenty years, a towering horse sculpture stood in the center of Jenin, a symbol of hope and resistance in Occupied Palestine. Built from the wreckage of war, it became part of Alaa’s childhood—until an Israeli bulldozer destroyed it on October 29, 2023. Left with only memories, he begins a search for what the horse meant, what remains, and what is lost.
This world premiere is written and performed by Palestinian actor and comedian Alaa Shehada, drawing on his own experiences. Shehada, known for his work with the Freedom Theatre in Jenin, constructs a narrative blending personal history with collective memory, exploring the intersection of art, survival, and imagination.
Told through a mix of storytelling and physical performance, Horse of Jenin examines the role of symbols in times of crisis. By piecing together fragments of the past, Shehada crafts a meditation on loss, resilience, and the power of remembering.
