“This heartwarming and charming musical is concluded with a joyous happy ending...It is slightly rushed ending, which doesn’t pack as much emotion as may have been expected from such a hopeful story. However, this remains an engaging and graceful musical, filled with hope and positivity.”

Lovely is really the word that comes to mind for the whole production. Jenna Russell heads up a strong cast of performers as Mrs Harris, the eponymous war widow who scrimps and saves for two and a half years to go to Paris to buy a Christian Dior dress. It is always satisfying to see a well-cast production, and here the use of double-casting the ensemble as Mrs. Harris's clients in London (Act 1) and acquaintances in Paris (Act 2) draws out parallels alluded to in the text and helps to fill out characters who could easily have been thin sketches. Instead, we come to care deeply about everyone we meet, which is a testament to the double-cast.

“While ‘Flowers for Mrs Harris’ doesn’t quite land the knockout blows we have become accustomed to in modern musical theatre, it certainly packs a significant emotional punch. Patience is rewarded as a stellar cast and character-led storytelling makes for compelling viewing as you find yourself willing Ada on at every step of her remarkable journey.”

“This is a very traditional musical and it’s easy to see how it could have been turned in to a film in the 1960s without any changes. It tells a cute enough story, has a great central performance and some fine support, but the staging is uninspired and the plot’s predictable.”

“Despite its 1950s setting and period details, ‘Flowers for Mrs Harris’ is a beautifully structured piece of contemporary musical theatre that is also an exceptional example of the art of adaptation.”
