Despite every attempt to upend gender norms, this fun folk musical concludes with a romantic happily ever after. Watching poor blushing men await marriage proposals from rich, fiercely independent women who mistreat them was uncomfortable. I wanted the gender flip to feel normal; I wanted our world to be progressive enough that seeing this kind of gender reversal would not be impactful. The show left me with persistent questions about how to enact meaningful change, or even define it.
