A mystical singer's arrival at a Kenyan jazz club sparks romance, intrigue, and self-discovery.
The creative team behind the 2021 Free Shakespeare in the Park production of Merry Wives returns to The Public Theater with the New York premiere of a captivating new musical, conceived and directed by Associate Artistic Director Saheem Ali. Featuring music and lyrics by Michael Thurber and a book by Tony Award nominee Jocelyn Bioh, the story takes place at Moto Moto, a sultry Afro-jazz club in Mombasa, Kenya. A mysterious singer arrives and casts a spell on everyone, especially a young man who has just returned home from studying in America. Torn between following his family’s political legacy and marrying his fiancée, his life takes an unexpected turn. Inspired by the myth of Marimba, the Goddess who created beautiful songs from her heartbreak, this powerful tale blends romance, the supernatural, and a journey toward self-realization.
