High quality, Earnest, Modernized, Reimagined, Absorbing

See it if You’re open to reinventions of classics in the canon. This modernization works better than Sorkin’s modernization of Camelot at LCT.

Don't see it if You want to see a classic setting and hear Chekhov’s 19th century language. Read more

Existentialist, Ponderous, Great staging, Uneven, Banal

See it if you want to see some excellent actors -- Carrell, Molina, Jackson Harper -- deliver a well-performed classic

Don't see it if you're not looking for a somewhat ponderous and extremely dialogue-heavy play. Not sure if it's better in the original Russian.

Slow, Intelligent, Great writing, Absorbing

See it if you truly love Chekhov you are a fan of the cast, particularly Steve Carell you don't mind contemporary language and feel

Don't see it if you want the definitive version of this play you are bothered by inventive casting you want to be inspired/deeply moved

Misguided rewrite, Confusingly lacking in emotional resonance, Funny, Disappointing

See it if You want to see famous actors giving good individual performances in a contemporary Chekhov lacking in place/time; interesting staging

Don't see it if You want more of a pure version of Chekhov that allows you to deeply feel the devastation as well as enjoy the funny moments Read more

Slow, Good staging, Overrated, Thought-provoking

See it if Interesting premise, although not a lot of action. Carell and Molina give good performances, even if not inspired. Mixed feelings

Don't see it if Updated text of play misses the mark. Lands in no man’s land Acting is uneven, saved only by Act 2. Weak ensemble work
